Asics' new Nimbus Marai, a fully recyclable running shoe, hit stores on April 12, aiming for a sustainable future. Retailing at $180, the initiative includes a returns program in several countries.
Japan's sportswear giant Asics has stepped up its game with the launch of the Nimbus Marai on April 12, 2024. Priced at $180, this shoe isn't just about style; it's a pledge for sustainability. Designed to be completely recyclable, from sole to upper, the Nimbus Marai is available across the globe, including markets in the U.S., UK, Netherlands, France, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. Its unique composition allows for easy recycling, ensuring every run contributes to less waste.
Fumitaka Kamifukumoto, the project leader of product development, emphasized the dual goal of the Nimbus Marai: uncompromised performance with significant environmental benefits. "We ask runners to bring back their shoes for recycling, helping us in creating a Sound Earth," Kamifukumoto stated. The shoe is part of Asics' broader ambition to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Asics isn't alone in its quest for greener pastures. The sportswear industry sees similar movements from competitors like Allbirds and New Balance, each pioneering their unique versions of eco-friendly footwear. November last year saw the formation of the FootWear Collective, a collaborative effort led by EarthDNA to champion sustainable shoe production among several top brands.
The push for circular footwear is gaining traction, with Asics at the forefront. The initiative reflects a growing consumer demand for products that don’t just perform but also preserve. With the Nimbus Marai, Asics is setting a precedent in the sports industry, hoping others will follow in its low-carbon footsteps.
