Amazon plans to invest $10B in Germany, focusing on AWS and logistics. The company aims to grow its workforce to 40,000 by 2024, reinforcing Germany as a key market. Recent investments include a $8.8B AWS expansion in the Rhine-Main area.
Amazon announced a $10B investment in Germany, primarily for its cloud subsidiary, Amazon Web Services (AWS). By 2026, $8.8B will go into expanding AWS in the Rhine-Main area, covering construction, data center operations, and imports of machinery and software. AWS aims to continue its growth as the leading cloud service provider globally, though it faces competition from Microsoft's Azure. "Germany is the heart of our pan-European innovations," said Stefan Höchbauer, AWS head of Germany and Central Europe.
In addition to AWS, Amazon is expanding its logistics and corporate presence in Germany. New headquarters are being built in Munich and Berlin to consolidate operations. Previously, employees in these cities were spread across smaller locations. The investment will help streamline operations and improve efficiency, supporting Amazon's growth in the region.
Amazon continues to invest in its logistics network with new centers in Erfurt, Großenkneten, and Horn-Bad Meinberg. These facilities will enhance Amazon's ability to serve customers quickly and efficiently. The focus on automation and robotics in these centers will also improve operational efficiency and reduce costs. This expansion is part of Amazon's broader strategy to strengthen its supply chain and logistics capabilities in key markets like Germany.
Amazon's investment in Germany will also boost employment. The company expects its German workforce to reach 40,000 permanent employees by the end of 2024. This growth underscores Germany's importance as a major market for Amazon outside the USA. Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomed the investment, stating it signals strong confidence in Germany's attractiveness as a business location. "As the federal government, we are working on exactly that - the competitiveness of the location and the investment conditions here," Scholz said.
