Ceva Logistics announces 350 layoffs as Zalando lets its contract with the company expire. The Neuendorf site will close, impacting 212 permanent and 138 temporary workers. The Unia union is demanding job security and negotiations to prevent mass layoffs.
Ceva Logistics revealed it will cut 350 jobs after Zalando decided not to renew their contract. This impacts 212 permanent employees and 138 temporary workers at Ceva's Neuendorf (SO) site. The closure is set for year-end, and workers are facing uncertainty. Despite a consultation period, there’s no clear path forward for those affected.
Unia, Switzerland’s largest trade union, strongly opposes the layoffs. They argue that both Ceva Logistics and Zalando have a social responsibility to protect employees. "It is unacceptable that a company of this size and importance puts people on the street without even presenting a plan to secure their livelihood," the union stated. They are pushing for immediate negotiations and job security measures.
Unia demands that Ceva Logistics create a social plan, which includes internal or external employment for all employees. They emphasize that Ceva, as part of a multibillion-dollar company, has the resources to avoid layoffs. Shifting blame solely to Zalando without securing solutions for workers is irresponsible, according to the union.
Zalando, Europe’s largest fashion platform, is criticized for distancing itself from the issue. The fashion giant has yet to present any plan to support Ceva workers. Unia argues that Zalando, with its significant influence and resources, should play an active role in securing the livelihood of the affected employees. As of now, both companies remain under pressure from unions to resolve this crisis fairly.
