Microsoft’s Bing search engine now mimics Google’s design in Edge. The stealth move hides Bing branding, tricking users into believing they’re using Google.
Microsoft is using a clever design to make Bing look like Google. In Edge, searching for "Google" displays a page with a playful doodle and a prominent search bar. This setup mimics Google’s signature homepage. Bing only shows its own branding after scrolling down. The visual similarity is striking, and casual users might think they are using Google. The design trick was first reported by “Windows Latest” on January 6, 2025. Microsoft has yet to comment on the move, sparking debate about user trust.
Microsoft’s latest design employs scrolling to hide Bing’s branding. On certain searches, the interface shifts just enough to obscure Bing logos, leaving only a search bar on the screen. This intentional layout makes the search page look like Google’s homepage. Such tricks could lead users to believe they are performing Google searches when they are actually on Bing. Google’s Chrome boss, Parisa Tabriz, criticized the tactic, calling it “a new low.”
Microsoft has a history of using Windows dominance to push Bing and Edge. In 2021, it placed ads for Edge on Chrome’s download page. Last year, it inserted Bing ads into Google Chrome itself. Critics argue these tactics blur boundaries, leaving users confused. Tech outlets like “The Verge” highlight Microsoft’s consistent efforts to grow Bing’s market share by any means necessary. Edge is now pinned by default on Windows desktops, further driving its usage.
The move has sparked controversy. Parisa Tabriz from Google openly criticized Microsoft on social media. "New year, new low," she tweeted, highlighting Microsoft’s long history of such tricks. Analysts believe this strategy could backfire, as it risks alienating users who value choice and transparency. While imitation is often praised, this approach might stretch ethical boundaries too far. Microsoft remains silent, but the debate over user trust continues to grow.
