š¬š§ eBay, Airbnb, Vinted Align with HMRC. New tax rules obligate eBay, Airbnb, and Vinted to share user transaction details with tax authorities starting January. This move aims to tighten the tax net on online sales and services, potentially impacting those with significant online earnings. Digital platforms must now regularly report income, ensuring tax compliance and fair play.
"Airbnb, eBay, Vinted, and other major online platforms have started the year under new mandates requiring them to share detailed transaction information with Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC). This move is part of a global effort, influenced by guidelines set by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), marking a significant shift in the digital marketplace's relationship with tax authorities.
Platforms will now need to collect and provide data such as tax IDs, bank details, and the value and volume of transactions. The goal is to clamp down on tax evasion and ensure that online sellers are adhering to tax laws akin to traditional businesses. For many casual sellers, the impact might be minimal, but for those heavily involved in online selling, it could be substantial.
The HMRC believes these new rules will help online sellers get their tax right the first time, providing a level playing field for all taxpayers. However, with the first reporting due only at the end of January 2025, there's a buffer period for sellers and platforms to adapt to these new requirements."
