Shopee, a major e-commerce firm in Southeast Asia, admitted to breaking competition laws in Indonesia. They agreed to modify their practices after the KPPU found them prioritizing their own courier service. Changes were proposed and approved on June 20.
Shopee, a leading e-commerce company in Southeast Asia, recently found itself in hot water with Indonesia's competition watchdog, KPPU. KPPU's investigation revealed that Shopee was prioritizing its own courier service, Shopee Express, for package deliveries. This practice violated Indonesian competition laws, specifically Law No. 5 of 1999, which governs delivery services on e-commerce platforms.
On June 20, Shopee proposed adjustments to its practices, which the KPPU approved. These changes aim to ensure fair competition in the delivery service market. Radynal Nataprawira, head of public affairs at Shopee Indonesia, confirmed the company's commitment to comply with all local laws. He stated, "Shopee is always committed to complying with all applicable regulations and laws in the Republic of Indonesia in conducting our business operations."
The adjustments include changes to the user interface to prevent the automatic selection of Shopee Express and J&T Express on the seller dashboard. This move is designed to level the playing field for other courier services with good performance records. Additionally, KPPU's investigation revealed a conflict of interest with an employee holding director positions in both Shopee Indonesia and Shopee Express, which could influence competition.
KPPU is also investigating Shopee's competitor, Lazada, for similar violations. If Lazada is found guilty, it could face fines up to 50% of its net profit or 10% of total sales during the violation period. This case underscores the importance of regulatory compliance in maintaining fair competition in the market. As Southeast Asia's e-commerce landscape grows, companies must adhere to local laws to ensure a fair and competitive environment for all players.
Will Shopee's changes be enough to restore fair competition?
