Shopify teams up with Roblox to let brands sell real items in-game, reaching 80M users. The pilot will launch in 2025, offering new opportunities for brands and creators. Roblox is popular among youth, despite past concerns over safety.
Shopify has partnered with Roblox, a massive online game platform, to launch an immersive commerce experience. Announced at the Roblox Developers Conference in San Jose, Shopify will allow brands and creators to sell real-world products directly in Roblox games. Shopify's president, Harley Finkelstein, highlighted the platform's 80M daily users as a key attraction for brands looking to expand their audience. "This will open up a massive audience of highly engaged Roblox users," he said. The pilot will launch in early 2025, followed by a larger rollout soon after.
Through this integration, users can interact with virtual items in Roblox, like a shirt on a mannequin, and trigger a Shopify-powered checkout to purchase both a physical and digital version of the item. This seamless experience keeps users within Roblox while shopping. Roblox's president added, "This gives creators and brands a new avenue into entrepreneurship." This partnership introduces a new trend called immersive commerce, where digital platforms blend shopping into virtual environments.
Roblox, which launched in 2006, is one of the world's largest online gaming platforms. It lets users create and play games, with some experiences going viral. For instance, "Dress to Impress" recently had 334K players online at once. Despite its success, Roblox has faced challenges, such as a class-action lawsuit in 2022 related to illegal gambling targeted at minors and a ban in Türkiye over child exploitation concerns. Roblox maintains that its shopping features will be available only to U.S. users aged 13+.
Roblox went public on the Nasdaq in 2021, with shares peaking at $134 during the pandemic. However, its value has since dropped to under $43 as of this week. Shopify’s entry into Roblox could provide a financial boost by offering brands new ways to interact with Roblox's youthful audience. The collaboration may help Roblox regain momentum, as both companies look toward future growth. This move represents the increasing convergence of gaming and commerce.
