Zara will launch its ‘Pre-Owned’ platform in the US by October 2024, offering secondhand sales, repairs, and donations. The service already operates in 16 European countries. Inditex, Zara’s parent, sees this as part of its sustainability push.
In October 2024, Zara plans to bring its secondhand clothing service to the United States. This platform will allow customers to sell, repair, or donate used Zara clothes. The initiative is part of Zara's broader push to extend the life cycle of its clothing and reduce waste. Zara’s owner, Inditex, has already launched this service in 16 European countries, starting with Britain in 2022. This expansion aligns with Inditex's goal of operating the platform in all major markets by 2025, in a bid to cut raw material consumption.
Zara’s ‘Pre-Owned’ service is already active in countries like Spain, France, and Germany. The service operates through its stores, website, and app. The company hasn’t shared specific user numbers for these regions yet, but Inditex CEO Oscar Garcia Maceiras said Zara’s online platforms see over 22M daily visitors globally. The move shows Zara's commitment to a more sustainable future, while continuing to grow its global presence.
Zara is not alone in the resale space. Competitors like H&M have already launched similar secondhand platforms. H&M partners with ThredUp to offer resale services in the US. However, Zara’s entry into the US secondhand market with a comprehensive service could differentiate itself, especially with its blend of selling, repairing, and donating options for customers.
Alongside the secondhand service, Zara will introduce live shopping shows in the US and other major markets, including Spain, Canada, and France. These shows have already seen success in China, where weekly five-hour broadcasts on Douyin, TikTok's Chinese counterpart, helped drive sales. Inditex plans to replicate this model to further boost Zara’s engagement and sales in these key regions.
