Klarna will implement random drug tests in Sweden starting January. The move aims to strengthen security ahead of its anticipated IPO in the US, says HR Director Mikaela Mijatovic.
Klarna will start random drug testing employees in Sweden starting January, according to an internal Slack message obtained by Business Insider. The HR Director, Mikaela Mijatovic, announced that external suppliers will conduct the tests to comply with local laws and industry standards. New hires in Sweden will also face testing during recruitment. Klarna plans to expand this policy to other countries where it operates, following local regulations. The announcement reflects the company's increased focus on internal security.
The decision comes as Klarna prepares for a US IPO. The company confidentially submitted draft registration documents to the SEC in November. CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski suggested enhanced safeguards, including randomized drug testing, during a September all-hands meeting. He noted that growing financial institutions like Klarna face increased scrutiny from criminals and hackers, making these measures necessary to protect the company.
Nafsika Karavida, an attorney at Reavis Page Jump in Sweden, confirmed that employee drug testing is generally allowed in Sweden’s private sector. She noted it is common in the fintech and banking industries and gaining popularity. Klarna’s move aligns with industry norms but adds a layer of complexity as the company grows and diversifies internationally.
In addition to drug testing, Klarna will review its handling of company devices and information sharing. The company emphasized its commitment to high security standards as part of its IPO readiness. Siemiatkowski hinted at other measures, such as monitoring employee locations and financial statements for sensitive roles. These steps aim to mitigate risks tied to the company’s growing visibility and responsibilities as a major fintech player.
