Meta is rolling out ads on Threads, testing them with select advertisers in the US and Japan. The company aims to monetize its 300M-user platform while maintaining user engagement.
Meta has begun testing ads on Threads, its micro-blogging platform. The ads are appearing for a small group of users in the US and Japan. This marks Meta’s first attempt to generate revenue from Threads since its 2023 launch. With over 300M active users, Meta sees a major opportunity for businesses to connect with potential customers.
The ads will appear as images within the Threads feed. Users will see them between organic posts on the home page. Advertisers won’t need custom content—Meta allows existing ad campaigns to extend to Threads. The company is also testing an AI-driven inventory filter to help brands control ad placement sensitivity.
Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, assured users that ads will feel relevant. “We’ll closely monitor this test before scaling,” he posted on Threads. Meta believes ads can “deepen connections” between users and businesses. The company emphasizes user control over ad preferences.
The move comes as Meta eases fact-checking policies in the US. Mark Zuckerberg said the company is “going back to its roots” by reducing censorship. With a growing user base and ad revenue push, Threads is set to become a bigger player in social media monetization.
