Alibaba's new AI search tool, Accio, enhances global sourcing for small businesses in Europe and the Americas. Tests show a 40% increase in purchase intent. Using generative AI, it processes 1B products across 100 markets for profitability insights.
Alibaba unveiled Accio, a generative AI-powered search engine designed for small businesses in Europe and the Americas. The tool aims to improve sourcing efficiency and sales for global SMEs. Kuo Zhang, president of Alibaba.com, noted that Accio increased purchase intent by 40% during initial tests. Named after a Harry Potter spell, Accio provides smart product searches and profitability insights using Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen large language model. The platform supports multiple languages, including English, German, and Spanish.
Accio pulls data from 50M businesses and incorporates 1B product listings spanning over 100 markets. The AI analyzes consumer popularity trends and profit projections, offering data-driven sourcing options. A demonstration showed Accio helping a startup develop a pickleball product line by suggesting top suppliers. The tool integrates Alibaba’s AI expertise while leveraging public and internal datasets, further boosting its market potential.
Alibaba’s move reflects a broader strategy to capture overseas markets as domestic growth slows. During the 2024 Singles’ Day shopping festival, over half of merchants used generative AI tools for operations, with 56% citing significant productivity boosts. Accio represents a similar effort to expand Alibaba’s global B2B footprint by targeting small businesses in high-growth markets like North America and Europe.
Despite Accio’s promise, challenges remain. Many firms struggle to monetize AI effectively, as highlighted by a Bain & Company survey. Alibaba’s domestic platforms, Taobao and Tmall, still dominate revenue. However, the sluggish Chinese economy and diminished Singles’ Day enthusiasm have pushed the company to diversify abroad. Accio could be a game-changer if it effectively captures the needs of global SMEs, paving the way for sustained international growth.
