Alibaba's Xianyu, an online platform for second-hand goods, is launching its first physical store. The Xianyu Recycle Shop, located in Hangzhou, will provide a convenient space for customers to sell or buy various used items. Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu Yongming highlights this move as part of the company's strategic innovations.
Alibaba's Xianyu, previously an online-only platform for second-hand goods, is launching a physical store in Hangzhou, China. Located in a revamped industrial estate, the Xianyu Recycle Shop represents a significant shift in the company's strategy, under the guidance of CEO Eddie Wu Yongming.
This all-category second-hand store will allow customers to consign a wide range of items, including fashion, home appliances, and books. However, it restricts certain trades like gold, jewellery, food, pets, and plants. This approach aims to streamline the selling process and attract a diverse customer base.
In November, Eddie Wu identified Xianyu as one of four key innovation businesses at Alibaba. This move towards physical retail is part of a broader strategy to transform these units into independent subsidiaries with their own market strategies, aiming to position Xianyu as a lifestyle platform for Chinese consumers.
Xianyu has shown significant growth, with a 20% increase in daily active users in the September quarter compared to the previous year. With over 500 million users, as stated by General Manager Ji Shan, the platform stands as one of Alibaba's largest apps in terms of user base.
The launch of the physical store could redefine the customer experience for reselling, providing a hassle-free option compared to the online platform. This innovative blend of online and offline retail could set a new trend in the e-commerce industry, particularly in the second-hand market.
