Shein's resale platform is now in Europe. Starting in France, it will expand to the UK and Germany. This follows its successful US launch in 2022, with 4.2M users joining in 2023. Shein aims to boost circular fashion with this expansion.
Chinese fast fashion giant Shein is expanding its resale platform, Shein Exchange, to Europe. The platform launched in France in June 2024 and will soon be available in the UK and Germany. This expansion follows the success in the US, where the platform debuted in October 2022 and attracted over 4.2M users by 2023.
The Shein Exchange is integrated into the existing Shein app. Users can easily list their past purchases for resale using a streamlined interface with a "sell" button next to each item. Buyers can use search and filter tools to find pre-owned Shein items efficiently. The goal is to make it easy for customers to participate in the circular economy.
Caitrin Watson, Shein's Director of Sustainability, stated, "We aim to integrate circular practices into our business model." Shein is a member of the World Circular Textiles Day community and focuses on using recycled and rescued materials. By launching Shein Exchange in Europe, Shein hopes to encourage more secondhand shopping and reduce environmental impact.
Surveys conducted by Shein in September 2023 show strong customer interest in circular fashion. In a study of 3,500 customers across multiple countries, nearly half of the respondents favored second-hand shopping. Shein plans to gather user feedback to continually improve the Shein Exchange platform and enhance user experience as it expands into new markets.
